Research Proposal Panel - Call For Abstracts

The Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) Neurocognitive Therapies and Translational Research (NTTR) Special Interest Group (SIG) is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for early-stage investigators to receive individually-tailored training on maximizing the clinical impact of their research.

Rationale: There is a notorious gap between research and its use in actual clinics. This gap is particularly salient for projects done by trainees, whose work gets overlooked by the clinical community. This workshop is geared towards improving the likelihood that the work of trainees immersed in neurocognitive research actually penetrates clinical audiences by incorporating translational, implementation, and dissemination-ready thinking into their work from the outset. Opportunity: Trainees immersed in neuroscience, medicine, bioengineering, and psychology training programs (doctoral students, postdocs, residents, or junior faculty) will be invited to attend a 3-hour conference session at the ABCT 2020 convention (November 19-22) in Philadelphia (which will be held virtually). Following a 5-minute “shark tank style” presentation of their proposal to an expert panel of facilitators from clinical psychological science, neuroscience, industry, dissemination, and implementation knowledge areas, expert panelists will address implementation challenges likely to arise from this work before it begins in earnest and will provide advice on how to address these challenges. Experts will work with trainees to increase its likely impact and clinical penetration while retaining the primary goals of this work

 

INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY:

Submit the following information in a combined PDF to nttrsig@gmail.com:

1. Proposal title, your name, affiliation, stage of career, ABCT membership status (member or non-member), and co-author names

2. Copy of CV

3. Structured abstract of no more than 500 words describing a research study proposal that focuses on advancing neuroscience-informed clinical practice (e.g., including, but not limited to, use of biomarkers, using neuroscience to personalize treatment for psychological disorders, neuroscience-informed prevention, cognitive bias modification, pharmacologic modulators, brain stimulation, and neurofeedback). Proposals may also focus on basic mechanistic science that has strong implications for clinical assessment, prediction, or prevention. Abstracts should contain the following sections:

   1. Scientific question: What is the central question you seek to answer? 

   2. Method: What methods will you use to examine your scientific question?

   3. Audience: Who do you want to affect with your work?

   4. Impact: How will this work contribute to the future of clinical practice? 

   5. Training goals: What specific skills is this project tailored to help you acquire or strengthen (e.g., experimental design, EEG or fMRI data analysis, clinical trial design, grant writing, etc.)?

 

CRITERIA FOR ACCEPTANCE:

1. Research in early stages of development (e.g., data collection has not yet begun) will be prioritized but research at any stage is welcome and will be seriously considered

2. Innovative translation of basic science findings with strong potential for real-world clinical impact

3. Rigorous design and methodology

4. Ability to attend scheduled session at the ABCT 2020 convention (virtually)

5. Candidates do not need to be members of ABCT to apply
